LMHS XC runner named Pennsylvania’s Gatorade Player of the Year
Sometimes it is coming up all “aces” for the Lower Merion High School athletes. And this year’s cross country team (XC) was no different. With stellar finishes throughout the season, one stand-out from the team was recently honored on a national level.
Senior Nick Mazzeo has been named the 2025-26 Gatorade Pennsylvania Boys Cross Country Player of the Year, one of the highest honors in high school athletics, the district said in a recent press release
“Now in its 41st year, the Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence in athletics, academics and community involvement,” said the district release. “Mazzeo is recognized as Pennsylvania’s top boys cross country athlete and joins an elite group of past honorees from across the country.”
According to the district, Mazzeo delivered “an exceptional senior season.”
“He won the New Balance RunningLane XC Championships with a time of 14:49.9 and placed 14th at the national Brooks XC Championships to earn Third Team All-American honors,” said the post. “He finished first or second in 10 of his 12 races and was runner-up at The Southern Showcase with a personal-best time of 14:10.1 — the third-fastest 5K in Pennsylvania state history.”
The cross country course wasn’t the only place Mazzeo has found success.
“In the classroom, Mazzeo has maintained a weighted 5.00 GPA,” said the district’s release. “He is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in the school band. He has volunteered as a peer tutor through Writing Fellows and the ACE Scholars Program and is active in the Lower Merion Technology Student Association, one of the state’s most established and successful TSA chapters.”
With a future so bright, Mazzeo will represent the Lower Merion community well as he goes on to shine his light in his continued education. Mazzeo will attend the University of Pennsylvania this fall, where he will compete in cross country and track & field.
Congratulations to Nick on this remarkable achievement! Well done!
