Radnor adds new intersections to AI-powered traffic light system

Radnor Township is using an artificial intelligence-powered traffic light system to help ease congestion along Lancaster Avenue.
The project reportedly began in 2020 when seven intersections — including the Route 76 interchange — were added to the Traffic Adaptive System. The system uses cameras and sensors to feed real-time traffic data into an algorithm, which enables the connected signals to ease traffic flow by adjusting the timing of green lights.
Before adding seven new Lancaster Avenue intersections on March 17 as part of the second phase of the project, the Traffic Adaptive System was “learning” for several weeks, the township said. The newly added intersections are St. Davids, Villanova Center, Sproul Road, St. Thomas Way, Ithan, Lowrey’s and Airedale. As the system was learning, “we fully anticipated that there would be glitches in the timing or equipment that would have to be adjusted,” Radnor Township leaders said via social media, adding that such glitches are “being addressed as we speak.” Drivers are encouraged to report any concerns about traffic signals at the newly added intersections.
