Great American Backyard Campout to bring s’more fun to Radnor

If a trip to the shore on Memorial Day weekend puts you in a summer mood, you may want to keep the fun going on the following weekend with an epic group camping experience.

Registration is now open for the 12th annual Radnor Great American Backyard Campout, which will be held starting at 4 p.m. on May 30 at Willows Park (with a rain date of June 13). Locals are encouraged to bring their own camping gear and “enjoy a night sleeping under the stars with your family” at the free event.

But sleeping in a tent is not the only activity available. With the help of Radnor Scouts Pack 284, activities will include camp cooking, s’mores, fire making, fishing, an orienteering mini course, hiking, creek walks and observing the night sky with telescopes.

Besides the Radnor Scouts, other organizations will be on hand for questions and conversation: the Darby Creek Valley Association, the Delaware Valley Astronomers Association, the Delaware Valley Orienteering Association,Hiking Hound Adventures, the Philadelphia Mycology Club, the Radnor Conservancy and the Radnor Environmental Advisory Commission.Young campers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and all campers are encouraged to participate in the Day of Unplugging initiative by enjoying the great outdoors without the distraction of technology. For those in need of tents, sleeping bags or sleeping mats, Hiking Hound Adventures is offering rentals for $5 to $10 per item on a first-come, first-served basis.
