Merion’s Multicultural Night brings together cultures from across the globe
America is a melting pot of amazing cultures, experiences, and backgrounds. It is a country that brings together a wide variety of differences, all under one proverbial umbrella. To celebrate that diversity, the Merion Cultural Heritage Night brings together the plethora of unique stories under the same roof, too, on Jan. 29.
“Merion’s Cultural Heritage Night once again brought together students, staff and families in a joyful, immersive celebration of the many cultures represented among its school community,” said a recent release from the Lower Merion School District. “The annual event invited families to share pieces of their heritage, turning the evening into a meaningful exchange of stories, traditions and experiences.”
Guests were welcomed to the event to peruse tables and displays created by district families.
“Throughout the gymnasium, students and families created engaging displays that reflected cultures from around the world,” said the LMSD release. “Tables featured everything from maps and artwork to traditional instruments, artifacts and representations of native wildlife.”
The hands-on learning experience didn’t stop with visual displays and hands-on activities. There was also one of the world’s greatest shared experiences available for all: a variety of ethnic foods!
“Attendees also had the chance to sample a variety of foods, offering a delicious window into global culinary traditions,” said LMSD’s release. “Many participants arrived dressed in traditional clothing, adding color, pride and authenticity to the evening.”
And while many got a unique opportunity to “travel the world” without leaving the district, there was more to the event’s goals than food, facts, and fun.
“Beyond the sights and sounds, Merion’s Cultural Heritage Night serves a deeper purpose,” said the district in a press release. “It helps students build understanding, empathy and respect by learning about the backgrounds of their classmates, while also giving them space to celebrate their own identities. Experiences like these strengthen connections across the school community and reinforce a sense of belonging for all.”
This year’s celebration was another resounding success for LMSD, which prides itself on its sense of belonging and care. To view highlights from the evening, be sure to check out the photos below.
