Main Line TV filmmakers focuses on drug abuse in Kensington

“Kensington in Crisis,” the award-winning documentary by Main Line TV filmmakers Jill Frechie and John Ricchutti is now on YouTube.

Frechie, a Gladwyne resident, and Ricchutti, of Villanova, spent more than 500 hours shooting and interviewing over 40 people for the 55-minute film.

Frechie said that the documentary highlights the severe toll that drug abuse has on our community.

“We highlight addiction, homelessness, and the struggle for recovery with raw, eye-opening images,” said Frechie.

The filmmaker said that the timed release of the film was purposeful.

“There is no better time than now to battle the addiction, homelessness, and despair we see every day on the streets of Kensington,” said Frechie. “It’s a microcosm of hopelessness throughout our country. Education and support are sadly needed.”

Based on data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in early 2026, drug overdose deaths in the United States are estimated to be between 72,000 and 73,000 annually.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has proposed significant financial investments – over $500 million – in the Kensington neighborhood as part of her 2026 budget, aiming to finally end the open-air drug market and address the humanitarian crisis, Frechie noted.
