GIANT grocery chain donates funds, hams to the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County, Salvation Army
The holiday season provides a wonderful time to give back. Giving Tuesday is just one of those perfect reminders to do so. And it doesn’t have to be just individuals that help one another. Sometimes the assistance from a larger organization can make even more of an impact.
The GIANT Company wanted to do just that in the local communities its stores serve. This Giving Tuesday, the corporation was able to donate $60,000 to local Salvation Army Corps and 3,000 hams to food banks and pantries.
“Hunger doesn’t take a break during the holidays,” said Jennifer Scott, chief human resources and community relations officer, The GIANT Company. “With more families facing food insecurity this holiday season, The GIANT Company is doing its part to contribute to the local efforts of our hunger relief partners to ensure all of our neighbors have full plates.”
The GIANT Company offered its support through The Salvation Army’s holiday hunger relief programs. The Company donated $5,000 to 12 different Salvation Army locations, for a total donation of $60,000. Recipient Salvation Army locations in Pennsylvania included Boyertown, Carlisle, Chambersburg, East Stroudsburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, Levittown, Norristown, Philadelphia, Sunbury, as well as one Winchester, Va. location.
“No one should have to wonder where their next meal will come from, especially during the holidays,” said Lt. Colonel Edgar George, Jr. Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division. “Thanks to The GIANT Company’s generous support, we can provide nourishing meals and relief to families in need across Eastern Pennsylvania. Their partnership reminds our neighbors that they are not alone, and that joy and compassion are still very much alive this season.”
In order to reach even more families, the Company also opted to purchase hams to bring joy to families in need of holiday plans. To ensure families have a centerpiece dish at their holiday table, The GIANT Company is also donating 3,000 hams to 20 area food banks and pantries across its operating area this month.
Among the donations were hams brought to the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County, located in Springfield. The YMCA offers assistance in a variety of ways to the county’s community members.
“Our mission is to serve everyone in our community, to help them meet their challenges with confidence and understanding,” said the YMCA’s website. “Ensuring our neighbors have food to sustain them through our weekly food bank distributions, providing programs for our Veterans or those suffering from cancer, or hosting blood drives and job fairs, the Y is here for our community.”
Thankful for the contributions, the YMCA’s website states donations of this type are crucial, especially during the holiday season.
“Fulfilling these roles is more vital than ever now,” said the site. “Donating to this cause will help us continue these efforts and drive positive change for everyone in our community.”
